Artistic Statement

The value of dance lies in its ability to allow both dancers and choreographers to express themselves fully through their work. This is something I value in my own work, artistic honesty and unabashed truth. Through my choreography, I always hope to convey a genuine, authentic feeling. That feeling may differ from my original vision to the audience's interpretation, but as long as they get some impression from it, my job is done. My choreography will almost always reflect the person I was when it was created. Choreographing without a purpose makes the dance inauthentic. Choreographing just for the sake of making choreography has never worked for me. Every piece I choreograph has a piece of me inside of it; that’s what makes it my work. Dance and choreography should always be rooted in passion; it is easy to tell when that passion is lacking. I often find inspiration through other artistic mediums. Songs, writing, and physical art frequently inspire or inform my choreography. The topics I tend to address in my work are present in some way in my own life. This connection is integral to me, and harkens back to the beginning of this statement, artistic honesty and unabashed truth. This genuineness and authenticity that I speak of can only be translated to the audience if it is felt by the dancers and choreographers alike. Because my choreography is a part of me, it is essential to remain truthful in my creation..
